Four seats · Carbon composite · Light-sport

One airframe. One engine, or two.

Plaid Aircraft is designing a fast four-seat airplane in carbon composite. Fly it as a single, then add a second engine at the tail and it becomes a centerline push-pull twin.

The aircraft

Start with one. Add the second later.

Both versions share the same carbon airframe, wing and cabin. The twin adds a rear engine and pusher propeller on the same centerline as the nose engine, so an engine failure brings no asymmetric thrust and no sudden swing.

Configuration A1 engine

Single

A turboprop in the nose pulls a clean, fast four-seater. Simple to own and fly.

Configuration B2 engines

Push-pull twin

A second turboprop at the tail adds speed and redundancy, with both engines on the centerline.

Design principles

Fast first. Then simple to build.

Every choice is weighed against cruise speed, the light-sport stall limit and how easily a part can be made and repeated.

Speed

A slender fuselage, a laminar-flow wing and faired gear keep drag low so modest power goes a long way.

Centerline thrust

Push-pull engines sit on one line, so losing one does not pull the nose sideways.

Light-sport

Sized to the FAA's MOSAIC rules, including the landing stall-speed limit, with flaps that earn their keep.

Buildable

Carbon parts from simple, repeatable molds, with a build sequence planned before the first layup.
